My heart and my support go out to Adria.

Also, my righteous anger.

Here’s the gist of what happened. Adria was at PyCon, a developer conference, and noticed that two men behind her were making lude sexual jokes. She snapped a photo, tweeted it, brought up the behavior to PyCon officials (since they did have a code of conduct for their conference), and the situation was “handled”.

What’s happened after that is a prime example of why women and people of color (and women of color, of course) are few and far between in the world of tech.

One of the men making the jokes, who was there representing his employer, got fired for his actions. Adria’s website starts getting DDoS attacks, as does her employer’s website. People are leaving her nasty comments and she’s been getting death threats and rape threats tweeted to her since yesterday.

Today, SendGrid fired Adria. And they didn’t just fire her, but they announced it on Twitter and on Facebook so people could spread the word and comment on it. The Facebook comments are particularly vile, including one where a man details a particularly gruesome threat against Adria, concluded with the words “Make her pay. Make her obey.”

All of this for speaking up about something which made her uncomfortable.

Now people are already trying to parse this six ways from Sunday saying that she shouldn’t tweeted or blogged the photo or even mentioned the interaction. Some say she should have just “kept it to herself”.

But how many of these types of interactions go on daily? This is not a unique problem as I’m sure many people of color will gladly tell you.

Microaggressions can build up, and it’s not like Adria intended to get this man fired. She spoke up against something she saw wrong as was dictated in the conference’s code of conduct (which they have now changed since the incident).

What does this incident say to women of color who want to be involved in technology?

This recipe is without doubt one of my absolute favorites and as I haven’t shared one in a while I thought I’d let you know about this one.

First of all, it’s rhubarb time right now and I absolutely love rhubarb, I’m not someone who likes very sweet sweet stuff but rhubarb has this nice sourness to it that makes it so very delishious. Ginger is also one of my favorites, its sweet spiciness is addicting ♥ So as you can figure, rhubarb + ginger = ABSOLUTE WIN for me ;)

Here we go, ginger rhubarb bars with rhubarb compote.

The bars:

Preheat oven to 180°C and line a 20x20 cm pan with parchment paper or something similar.

Then mix oats, flour, sugar and salt in a big bowl together and add the coconut butter without melting it first, cut it in with a knife. You can of course also just use normal (not salted) butter, but, as those who’ve read my past recipes, I always cook with coconut butter. (This time though I didn’t have enough so I used a little honey and olive oil to get the right consitence of the mass.)

Take about half of the mass and press it into the bottom of the pan to make the crust. Put into the preheated oven for about 40 min.

In the meantime mix the rhubarb, flour, sugar, ground ginger and fresh, cut coriander leaves. When the crust has finished spread the rhubarb mixture on top evenly, then add the rest of the oat mixture on top. If you have crystallized ginger, also add it finely chopped. Bake again for about 45 - 50 min until the top gets nice and brownish.

Afterwards let the pan cool off then immediately eat or cut into squares and store in a airtight container at a cool spot :)

For the compote:

I used about 200 g rhubarb, added a little orange juice, red wine, about 30 g sugar, a little honey, cocoa powder, cinnamon and water and cooked it for about 30 min. For this you can leave the rhubarb unpeeled (usually you peel it) because it gets soft after cooking it for such a long time anyways though make sure to wash it properly before using it.

Oh and I also added some blackberries to the compote afterwards, tastes good and makes the color prettier :)

2 slices whole wheat light bread (40 to 45 calories per slice

1 oz nonfat cheese slice

1 cup raw or cooked vegetables, such as zucchini, carrots or tomatoes

Cheese and Crackers

1 oz nonfat or 2% reduced fat cheese

3 to 5 whole wheat crackers

Vegetables and Hummus

1 cup raw vegetables, such as carrots, celery or cherry tomatoes

¼ cup hummus

Oatmeal

½ cup plain oatmeal

4 oz fat free or skim milk

4 oz water

Cook according to directions on the oatmeal box.

Tuna and Crackers

2 oz canned tuna or chicken breast

3 to 6 whole wheat crackers

Cream Cheese and Salmon

2 oz smoked salmon

1 tbsp fat free cream cheese

½ whole wheat small bagel, toasted

Stuffed Mushrooms

4 white mushrooms caps

2 tbsp Romano cheese

2 tbsp Italian breadcrumbs

½ garlic clove, minced

1 tsp mint leaves, chopped

1 tsp Italian parsley, chopped

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Salt and Pepper to taste

Mix the cheese, breadcrumbs, garlic, parsley, mint and ½ tbsp of olive oil until well combined. Salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the cheese mixture into the mushroom cap. Place on a baking sheet, cheese side up. Drizzle with remaining olive oil. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes.

Greek Pizza

100 calorie whole wheat pita or sandwich thin

2 oz spinach, chopped

1 ½ tbsp marinara sauce

1 tbsp feta cheese

Spread marinara sauce on the pita. Top with spinach and feta cheese. Place in the toaster or under the broiler until sauce is warmed and cheese is melted.

Nicoise Salad

1 new potato, cooked and sliced

1 egg, hardboiled and sliced

1 cup of spinach or lettuce, chopped

1 oz drained tuna

4 olives

White wine vinegar

Create the salad by topping the lettuce with tuna, olives, potato and hard boiled eggs. Salt and pepper to taste. Top with a splash of vinegar.

Falafel Salad

2 tsp olive oil

1 tbsp onion, chopped

¼ garlic clove, minced

1 ½ oz canned chickpeas, drained

Pinch of cumin

Pinch of coriander

Pinch of parsley

¼ egg, beaten

1 cup spinach or lettuce

In this filling recipe, heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Warm the oil and heat the onion and garlic until softened. In a bowl, mash together chickpeas with spices. Add the egg to the chickpea mixture and mix until combined. Mold the chickpea mixture into 2 balls and heat in the skillet until golden brown and firm. Serve over lettuce.

KY Jam….. A DIY KY’ish Personal Lubricant

Cheap, easy to make personal lubricant. Start to finish is about 10 minutes without cooling time. I’m assuming this is water based, since all it is is water and corn starch. If you are allergic to water or corn starch, do not use. USE EXTERNALLY! Also, since the comments are talking about this being glue, YES, you can glue things together with this, but it is a VERY weak bond since the promintent ingredient is water. The proportions are not correct for making a glue, and it takes a while for this stuff to dry out. I glued two sheets of printer paper together with a tiny dot of the stuff, but I separated the sheets like they were not glued once it dried.

4 tsp corn starch (I do not suggest putting the corn starch in a container. It tends to stick to everything. For the purpose of this guide, it is shown in a small bowl)
